Should stackers buy numismatic coins or bullion coins?

Topics:

numismatic coins vs bullion, bullion stacking, rare coins, coin grading, precious metal investing

Bullion coins are purchased primarily for their metal content. Numismatic coins are purchased for rarity, condition, historical significance, collector demand, and grading. The two markets can overlap, but they are not the same.

Most stackers should focus on bullion first because it is easier to price and easier to compare against spot. Numismatic coins require specialized knowledge, and a buyer can overpay if they do not understand grading, mintage, authenticity, and market demand.

Numismatic coins can be profitable for knowledgeable collectors, but they are not the simplest way to stack gold and silver. A stacker seeking metal exposure should avoid paying large collector premiums unless they intentionally want to enter the coin-collecting market.
