What is the best precious metal for stackers to buy first, gold or silver?

Topics:

Compare gold vs. silver for your first bullion purchase, including affordability, premiums, storage, resale value, and the benefits each metal offers new stackers.

For most new stackers, silver is often the easier first purchase because the entry price is lower, the pieces are more divisible, and it teaches the real-world difference between spot price, dealer premium, and resale value. A beginner can buy a few one-ounce silver coins or rounds without committing the amount of capital required for a one-ounce gold coin.

Gold becomes more attractive when the stacker wants compact wealth storage, lower storage volume, and a metal that usually carries lower percentage premiums on larger purchases. Gold is also treated more clearly as a monetary reserve asset, while silver has both monetary and industrial demand.

A practical answer is that silver is usually better for learning and making small, regular purchases, while gold is better for concentrating significant value into a smaller space. Many experienced stackers eventually hold both because the two metals can behave differently across economic conditions. I am currently more bullish on silver because of its substantial industrial demand and the global silver market’s forecast sixth consecutive annual supply deficit in 2026.
