Why did silver premiums become so high during market panics?
Topics:
silver premiums, physical silver shortage, retail bullion shortage, silver spot price, coin premiums
Silver premiums rise during panics when retail demand exceeds the available supply of finished coins, rounds, and bars. The shortage may be in fabrication capacity, mint output, shipping, or dealer inventory rather than in the global wholesale silver supply itself.
This explains why spot price can fall while retail silver remains expensive. In March 2020, for example, market stress created severe disruptions, and many buyers found that physical silver products were scarce or carried unusually high premiums.
Stackers should understand that a high premium is not always a bullish signal. It may mean retail supply is tight, but it can also make new purchases expensive. Patience and product comparison become especially important during panic buying.
