Why do real interest rates matter for gold and silver stackers?
Topics:
real interest rates gold, opportunity cost of gold, negative real yields, silver macro, gold price drivers
Real interest rates are interest rates adjusted for inflation. If a savings account pays 4% but inflation is 6%, the real return is negative. Gold becomes more attractive when cash and bonds fail to preserve purchasing power.
Gold does not pay interest, so its opportunity cost rises when safe assets offer high positive real returns. This was a key reason gold struggled after the early 1980s when monetary policy became restrictive and inflation expectations declined.
Silver is influenced by real rates too, but it also responds to industrial demand and speculative flows. Stackers who understand real rates can better interpret why metals sometimes fall even when headlines about inflation or government debt appear bullish.
