Why do some stackers buy constitutional silver or junk silver?
Topics:
constitutional silver, junk silver, pre 1965 silver coins, 90 percent silver, fractional silver
Constitutional silver, often called junk silver in the United States, refers to older circulating coins that contain silver but usually have little numismatic value. Examples include pre-1965 US dimes, quarters, and half dollars that contain 90% silver.
Stackers like constitutional silver because it is fractional, recognizable, and historically familiar. Small-denomination silver coins can be useful for barter scenarios, small sales, or flexible liquidation without cutting or selling larger bars.
The downside is that junk silver premiums can become high during retail shortages. Stackers should calculate the actual silver content and compare the price per troy ounce with other forms of silver before buying.
